Coronavirus is the current news around the world. What is it? According to WHO, it is a group of viruses that cause a range of diseases in human beings and animals.  

The Coronaviruses (CoV) can cause a simple infection like common cold to complex conditions like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). Due to their relation with Coronaviruses (CoV) you name them as MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV).  

There is no vaccine yet, so how can you prevent coronavirus infection? 

Avoid non-essential travel to China  

 The safest way to prevent coronavirus is to keep away from china since it is the epicenter of severe infection.   

Take these precautions if you must travel. 

  • Get advice from a healthcare provider who understands the infection patterns. 
  • Avoid any contact with infected people 
  • Avoid contact with animals, both alive and dead. You should also avoid visiting animal markets and even animal products like uncooked meat. Any meat you consume should be cooked well. 

Hand washing  

Washing often helps to stay healthy. You will prevent infections for you and your loved ones by frequent washing of hands, especially during these times when coronavirus is rife. Maintain a habit of washing hands in these circumstances: 

  • Before preparing food and during preparation if you touch something else 
  • Before eating  
  • Before and after you care for an ill person with vomiting, sneezing, coughing or diarrhea  
  • Before and after treating a fresh cut or wound 
  • When visible dirt accumulates  

 You should also wash hands after these activities: 

  • Using the bathroom  
  • Sneezing, coughing or nose blowing 
  • Touching animals, animal feed and waste  
  • Handling pet food or treats 
  • Touching garbage 

Make a habit of washing hands with soap and water frequently and for at least 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol when soap and water are unavailable. 

Mind things you touch  

Seasonal illnesses spread much when we pick bugs by touching contaminated surfaces. A virus can quickly transfer to sensitive body parts like the eyes, mouth, or nose from the hands, and it enters the cells to cause sickness. Do not touch your mouth, nose, or eyes, especially if you have not washed your hands for a moment. 

  • Create time to frequently clean and disinfect objects or surfaces that many people touch. 
  • Try covering the mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing. Throw any tissue you use in a closed dirt bin. 
  • Avoid place with people who show symptoms of coronavirus.  Keep distance if you have the symptoms to prevent the spreading of the virus.

Use facemask well  

The virus spreads between people due to close contact. Face masks provide some level of barrier against splashes and larger droplets of fluids from infected people.  Center for Disease Control (CDC) does not recommend wearing of masks for general use since they are difficult and uncomfortable to wear for a long period except at pales with widespread transmission like Wuhan. CDC, however, recommends the use of face masks by the people who demonstrate symptoms of COVID-19(the new coronavirus) to prevent spread. 

 People taking care of the sick in a closed setting like a home or even in a healthcare facility should wear a face mask.    You should note that surgical face masks are not efficient in providing adequate respiratory protection. Their role is to prevent the spread of pathogens and not an airborne virus. A surgical mask seal does not cover the entire face. It cannot filter viral airborne particles. 

Healthcare workers 

Workers at healthcare institutions should use antiseptic products that national and CDC infection control guidelines recommend. Hand hygiene by cleaning the hands when necessary without skipping prevents the spread of germs, including those that are antibiotic-resistant.
